The Elegant Face

Think of the whole face as one rounded shape rather than a set of defined lines — every color should melt into the next with nothing sharp anywhere. The shades themselves sit on the gentle end of the spectrum, soft rather than saturated, with a pastel cast running underneath even the deeper ones. A small dose of shimmer keeps it from going flat: enough to catch the light, never enough to glitter.

That gentleness lines up with the rest of your look: a Classic base with a touch of Romantic softness folded in, never enough to take over. Makeup is where that softness gets to show most clearly — a face that reads as gracious and a little luminous rather than sharply contoured.

How to apply the idea

Eyes take softly muted shadow, blended together so thoroughly that no hard line separates one shade from the next, topped with a hint of sparkle for a bit of lift. Keep the eyeliner heavily smudged rather than sharply drawn, and don’t skimp on mascara — it’s doing real work here. Blush goes on in a moderate color, blended for a muted rather than sculpted effect; you can still sweep it in the same angled stroke a more contoured face would use, just soften every edge as you blend so nothing reads sharp. Lips stay moderate in color, applied sheer and translucent rather than opaque, so the overall face stays soft rather than heavy anywhere.

Your colors

Palettes fall into four groups by undertone and contrast — Groups I and II run cool, Groups III and IV run warm. Find your nearest group and pair the eyeshadow trio (lid, orbital bone, highlighter) with the matching blush and lip shade below. Every group follows the same shape: a mid-tone lid color, a deeper orbital shade to soften the crease, and a shimmering highlighter — the highlighter is where the sparkle concentrates most on this line.

Line the eye in the same tone as the lid, just slightly deeper, and keep the overall effect matte with only that touch of sparkle added last — think of the shimmer as the final flourish, not the base. Save the heaviest concentration of iridescence for the highlighter rather than spreading it everywhere.

Avoid

The common thread across every avoid here is anything that turns your face hard, flat, or absent — this concept depends on softness and a little shimmer showing through.

• An overly ornate or overdone face.
• Heavy contouring with sharp edges, or smoky, dark color combinations.
• An all-neutral face with no warmth or sparkle to it.
• An overly sparkly, glittery face, or a bare “no makeup” look.
