The Exotic Face

Your makeup runs bold and fresh at once. The idea is strong, confident color, worked well into the skin, over a shape that is clearly defined and lightly sculpted — carved enough to show, never so hard it turns sharp. It is the same instinct as the rest of your look: real presence, no fuss, nothing that reads as delicate or overworked.

That definition is the whole engine. You are building a strong, contoured face that plays up the eyes, the mouth, and the cheekbones together, but stops short of going loud on color for its own sake. Think of it as your bold, blunt-edged frame translated to the face: real scale and presence, no delicacy, no severity. An exotic touch on the eye is welcome and very much on-brand — just steer clear of colors that look plastic and of piled-on glitz. And resist the urge to skip it all: a bare, too-minimal face reads as unfinished here, not effortless, and undersells everything else you have going on.

How to apply the idea

On the eye, lay in a deep lid shade to set a strong, defined shape, keep the colors bold but thoroughly blended, and stay mostly matte. Line close and deep in the same tone as the lid taken several shades darker, blended so the edge never goes crisp — the outer lid stays smoky and dark, the orbital bone carries a bold color, and a rich highlighter finishes it, with any shimmer confined to that highlighter alone. For cheeks, place a bold shade along the cheekbone in a slightly angular sweep, then soften the edge so it never cuts a hard line. Lips balance the whole face with a deep, strong color to match the weight of the eyes and cheeks, worn a touch glossy — usually matte, though the palest shades can take a little frost, with a heavy gloss layered over the top.

Your colors

Kibbe sorts palettes into four groups by undertone and contrast — Groups I and II cool, Groups III and IV warm. Read the eyeshadow column as a trio (outer lid, then orbital bone, then highlighter), and pair it with the blush and lip shade on the matching numbered row. Find the group that fits your coloring and treat the three numbered rows as variations to play among, not a hierarchy — any row within your group is fair game.

Across every group, eyeshadow stays matte, with the shimmer saved for the highlighter alone, and the liner tracks the lid tone taken several shades deeper for a strong, defined edge. Lipstick is usually matte too — the lightest shades can carry a slight frost — and a heavy gloss goes on over the top either way, so the mouth stays balanced against the weight of the eyes and cheeks.

Avoid

The two ways to miss here sit at opposite ends. Go too pale and neutral and the face looks washed out and unfinished; pile on sparkle and ornament and it tips into fussy. Your face wants strong, blended color over a defined shape — bold but never plastic, exotic but never glitzy.

• A too-dull or too-neutral face; a bare, minimal face that reads as unsophisticated.

• Artificial-looking eye colors that fight the fresh, exotic effect.
